2012 Hyundai Elantra (October 2011)

The Hyundai Elantra was completely redesigned for the 2011 model year, and little has changed for 2012. Hyundai improved horn sound, calibrated the steering, added fog lights to the GLS Preferred Package and is offering more color options and an optional roadside assistance kit. The most significant update is the addition of Hyundai’s Active Eco System that comes on all Elantra models with an automatic transmission. Hyundai says this system improves fuel economy by 7 percent, but that claim hasn’t been independently tested.

The 2012 Hyundai Elentra models bring a unique and contemporary design. Many people have been quite happy with the sleek design of Hyundai’s slightly larger car, the Sonata, and it seems that the Elantra is copying a few of its design elements.  One of the most noticeable improvements to the 2012 Elantra is the redesigned grill.  The grill has been crafted in more of an open mouth design.  This design ensures that the 2012 Elantra will suck up all the air it needs to keep its engine cool.

The 2012 Elantra is more expensive than the 2011 model, which starts at $14,945. The 2012 model starts at about $16,450 for the GLS trim with a manual transmission. Adding an automatic transmission increases the price by $1,000, and upgrading to the Limited trim, which adds leather seats and a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, raises the price to $20,445.

Avg. Paid: $15,960 - $21,197
MSRP: $15,195 - $20,445

For 2011 Nissan Maxima sees few changes from the 2010 model year. Notable revisions include changes to the Sport Package on the SV trim, which now includes smoked headlamps, a dark chrome grille and gray interior stitching on the upholstery.

2012 Hyundai Sonata (September 2011)

The 2012 Sonata starts at $19,695 and comes in three trims levels: GLS, SE and Limited. Hyundai also makes the Sonata Hybrid, which is reviewed separately.

The 2012 Hyundai Sonata carries over mostly unchanged for 2012. The main changes compared to the 2011 model are its new standard Blue Link telematics system, half-inch bigger touch screen for its optional navigation system, optional HD radio and optional full panoramic moonroof.

A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is standard, while a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder is optional. Both are powerful, yet fuel-efficient engines for an affordable midsize car. The base four-cylinder and turbocharged four deliver 198 and 274 horsepower, respectively.

Only the base GLS model is offered with a standard six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic is optional on the GLS and standard on SE and Limited models. Buyers looking for a sportier model should test the SE trim, which comes with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and a sport-tuned suspension.
The 2012 Hyundai Sonata also boasts better fuel economy than the 2011 model. EPA ratings for the base engine with a manual transmission are the same, but with an automatic, city ratings increase 2 mpg. The turbo engine receives a 1 mpg increase on the highway compared to 2011.

Avg. Paid: $20,213 - $28,509

One of the Sierra’s greatest strengths is its customizability. It has multiple engine options, four of which are FlexFuel capable, meaning that they can take a combination of gasoline and E85 fuel.

There are also Regular, Extended and Crew Cab models that have different seating capacities, truck bed sizes and interior options that allow shoppers to choose the right features for their needs.

A precise-shifting 5-speed manual is standard, but for those who want the best of both worlds, the Fit Sport model, when fitted with the automatic transmission, features paddle-shifters alongside the steering wheel.

2011 Toyota Camry (August 2011)

The Camry was last redesigned for the 2008 model year. Some material used in this review may refer to earlier model years that are substantially similar. The Camry is available in a stripped-down base model, a better-equipped LE edition, a sport-tuned SE model and a top-of-the-line XLE trim level. The 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid, a close variant of the gas-only Camry, is reviewed separately.

Shoppers might want to note that 2007 through 2010 Camry sedans were included in a pair of massive and highly-publicized recalls due to allegations that a Camry, under certain conditions, could accelerate even when its driver wasn’t touching the gas pedal. A Toyota spokesperson tells us that the 2011 Camry’s accelerator pedal is a new design that's not affected by the recalls. The 2011 Toyota Camry is also one of the first Toyotas to feature a new brake override system, which ensures that the engine can’t cause the car to accelerate while the brake pedal is being pressed. There have been no allegations of unintended acceleration regarding the 2011 Toyota Camry, but it has only been on the market for a very short time.

2011 Lexus RX 350 (June 2011)

The RX 350 comes in front or all-wheel drive. It's also available as a hybrid, the RX 450h, which is reviewed separately. Though its gas mileage is substantially better than the RX 350's, the hybrid also costs more than $5,000 more. So it would take many years to offset its price premium in fuel savings. For 2011, the only notable change to the RX is its standard brake override system. Because the 2010 and 2011 models are so similar, you could save some money by taking a 2010 model off a dealer’s hands.

MSRP: $38,375 - $39,775
Invoice: $34,728 - $35,995
MPG: 18 City / 25 Hwy

Lease Deal

Deal: $499 a month for 36 months with $4,198 due at signing

2011 Lexus ES (June 2011)

The 2011 Lexus ES is a carryover from last year. The ES has only one trim option, but Lexus allows you to customize by adding one of two packages. Unfortunately, the cheapest package costs about $2,000, and the most expensive is about $5,000, making the 2011 ES reach almost $40,000. Shoppers receive a lot of high-tech convenient options, but once some buyers calculate their monthly payment they might look elsewhere.

Shoppers should note that last year, the ES was included in a massive and highly-publicized recall due to a floor mat design that can trap the vehicle's accelerator pedal, causing unintended acceleration. If you plan to purchase a 2010 model, make sure everything is in order before you drive your car off the lot.

MSRP: $36,025 - $36,025
Invoice: $32,662 - $32,662
MPG: 19 City / 27 Hwy

Lease Deal

Deal: $419 a month for 36 months with $4,118 due at signing
Notes: Offer available in New England, Greater New York, Mid Atlantic
Expires: 07/27/11

2011 Lexus GS (June 2011)

The Lexus GS is available in two well-equipped trim levels based on the powertrain you choose. The GS 350 features a 303 horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 and is available with all-wheel drive. The GS 460 doesn’t have an all-wheel drive option, but offers improved performance courtesy of its 4.6-liter V8, which puts 342 horsepower to the rear wheels. The additional power of the GS 460 costs about $6,500 more than a base GS 350. Still, the GS generally undercuts the competition, with base prices below the Infiniti M and the Mercedes E-Class sedan.

For 2011, the GS includes only a few changes from the 2010 model year. The most significant addition is a brake override system that helps prevent unintentional acceleration.

MSRP: $46,100 - $48,050
Invoice: $41,490 - $43,244
MPG: 19 (2010) City / 26 (2010) Hwy

Notes: Offer available on GS 350 with AWD in New England, Greater New York, Mid Atlantic

2011 Lexus IS (June 2011)

For 2011, the Lexus IS gets a minor facelift that updates the car’s exterior, interior, adds a new F Sport package and brings a first for the IS lineup: an all-wheel drive IS 350. With AWD competition from Audi, BMW, Cadillac and Infiniti, it only made sense for Lexus to get in on the act.

While the 2011 Lexus IS looks sleeker, it is mechanically similar to than the older IS. Exterior updates include a new front grill and bumper, new LED daytime running lights, refreshed taillights and a revised tailpipe design. On the inside, the interior remains largely the same but the 2011 IS benefits from new, optional F Sport seats that have grippy microfiber to hold the driver in place during aggressive driving.
