2011 Toyota Camry (May 2011)

The Camry was last redesigned for the 2008 model year. Some material used in this review may refer to earlier model years that are substantially similar. The Camry is available in a stripped-down base model, a better-equipped LE edition, a sport-tuned SE model and a top-of-the-line XLE trim level. The 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid, a close variant of the gas-only Camry, is reviewed separately.

Shoppers might want to note that 2007 through 2010 Camry sedans were included in a pair of massive and highly-publicized recalls due to allegations that a Camry, under certain conditions, could accelerate even when its driver wasn’t touching the gas pedal. A Toyota spokesperson tells us that the 2011 Camry’s accelerator pedal is a new design that's not affected by the recalls. The 2011 Toyota Camry is also one of the first Toyotas to feature a new brake override system, which ensures that the engine can’t cause the car to accelerate while the brake pedal is being pressed. There have been no allegations of unintended acceleration regarding the 2011 Toyota Camry, but it has only been on the market for a very short time.

2011 Honda Civic (May 2011)

Choosing to buy a Civic is the easy part. The hard part is deciding which trim is right for you. The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. Rather than allow shoppers to select the options they want, Honda offers additional features to each trim level. One of the few optional features is the navigation system. Prices begin at $15,805 for the DX and reach $23,955 for the EX-L with navigation. Most shoppers will start with the DX-VP trim because it offers air conditioning. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, is also available and offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Honda Civic.

The 2010 Honda Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Honda Civic.

The easiest-to-spot changes are found on the 2011 Honda Accord’s exterior. Although there are minor modifications, the Accord sports an updated front grill and bumper, rear deck lid and a new set of wheels.

Additionally, the 2011 Honda Accord can be had in a new leather-equipped Special Edition (SE) trim. The SE strikes a balance between value and luxury by providing leather, heated seats – with driver’s lumbar support – and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Car and Driver points out, “This is clearly Honda's Hyundai Sonata fighter, albeit with 21 fewer ponies." Including the new SE, there is a total of seven trim levels.

2011 Chrysler 300 (May 2011)

The 2011 Chrysler 300 is set to battle its affordable large car competition with four distinct trim levels: base, Limited 300C rear-wheel drive, and 300C all-wheel drive. The base 300 starts at just under $28,000 after you tack on destination charges, and comes with Chrysler’s new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine. Standard features include automatic headlamps, LED-illuminated “C” shaped daytime running lights, dual exhaust, keyless entry with push-button start, steering wheel audio controls and a Uconnect 8.4 inch touchscreen infotainment system with an auxiliary input jack, Sirius Satellite Radio and USB port.

Opt for the Limited trim, and you’ll add about $4,000 to the bottom line, as well as leather upholstery with heated seats, Bluetooth, a backup camera, 18-inch wheels and an upgraded sound system. Those looking for V8 power will need to opt for the 300C, which starts at just under $39,000. Upgrading to the C trim adds the sportier Touring suspension, navigation, bigger brakes and of course the 363-horsepower HEMI V8. Additionally, 300C models come with the luxury package, adding leather, wood trim, heated rear seats and heated/cooled cupholders.

Those seeking all-wheel drive will have to opt for the top-of-the-line 300C AWD model, as the V6 is currently only available in rear-wheel drive configurations. Starting at just over $41,000, the 300C AWD features a unique all-wheel drive system, which uses only the rear wheels until the front ones are needed. Chrysler claims this system offers a five-percent gain in fuel economy when compared to cars that do not employ a similar system.

With competitors like the Hyundai Sonata stealing the limelight, the Chevrolet Malibu may not get much attention in the midsize car class. For 2011 the F-150 comes with a slew of new engines. A base 3.7-liter V6 produces 302-horsepower and a 5.0-liter V8 with 360-horsepower are the two bottom rung engines. Surprisingly positioned above the 5.0-liter V8, Ford is introducing a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 365 horsepower. F-150s equipped with the twin-turbo mill are capable of towing 11,300 pounds, just as much as the top line 411-horsepower 6.2-liter V8. Off-road oriented SVT Raptor, luxurious Lariat Limited and special Harley-Davidson edition F-150s come standard with the 6.2-liter V8. All models receive a six-speed automatic transmission.

Other changes include a 4.2-inch LCD display in the gauge cluster that displays information about fuel economy, towing and off-roading. 2011 Ford Super Duty (May 2011)

The Ford in the 2011 Super Duty is its new engines. The first is a 6.2-liter gasoline-powered V8 that makes 385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque.  If that's not enough hauling power, any of the Super Duty trucks can be outfitted with a 6.7-liter turbocharged Power Stroke diesel. That engine makes 390 horsepower and 735 pound-feet of torque.

As a result of the power and the beefy chassis (which carry over from the 2008 redesign), the Super Duty gets the title of the most hauling capacity. The F-120, the smallest of the Super Dutys, can tow up to 14,000 pounds, which is a half ton more than comparable models from Dodge, Chevy and GMC. The mammoth Ford F-450 (which requires a commercial driver's license in some states) can tow up to 24,400 pounds -- three tons more than the largest Dodge Ram HD and 4,400 pounds more than the largest heavy duty trucks from GM.

2011 Ford Flex (May 2011)

The Ford Flex only change for 2011 is the addition of a new Titanium model. It slots in above the previous top-end Limited trim and starts at just over $40,000. That makes it an expensive proposition for a family SUV. However, for the money you get all the bells and whistles the Flex offers, including standard navigation and a power liftgate, plus a bunch of blacked-out exterior features that make the Flex look even more bad-ass than it already does. The Flex Titanium is certainly not your parents’ Country Squire.

The 2011 Ford Flex comes standard with front-wheel drive, while all trims except the base model have available all-wheel drive. It comes in several trims -- the base SE, SEL, Limited and all-new Titanium. Be sure to check out current Ford deals that may be available on a new Flex.

2011 BMW 3-Series (May 2011)

The 2011 BMW 3-Series is the brand’s bread and butter; it’s BMW’s highest-selling car. Not only are there sedans, coupes, convertibles and wagons, but there are also rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. Additionally, there are several different motors. This means buyers have the choice of plain Jane, “that’s fast,” and “oh my!”  With that said, we review the high-performance M3 separately.

For 2011, BMW gives the coupe and convertible some new cosmetic modifications to their front and rear. Additionally, BMW ditched the older twin-turbo setup in the 335i for a single turbo powerplant. Although it may sound like a bad idea for a performance car, don’t worry. The new engine makes the same power but is more fuel-efficient.

Also new for 2011 BMW are a pair of new models, the 335is coupe and convertible. For 2011, BMW has pulled the old switcharoo as the standard 335i gets a single turbo motor while the 2011 335is retains the older, bi-turbo engine.
